Over the years, plenty of rock stars have gone through makeovers, and it’s always a fun thing. Who can forget Fred Durst’s big appearance change before the band played Lollapalooza in 2021?
Durst debuted the “dad vibes” look and looked like a totally different person from his backward cap-wearing days of the 1990s and early-2000s. It created a ton of buzz across the web, which was a good thing for Limp Bizkit.
Now, one beloved rocker has changed his appearance ahead of his band releasing a new album, and it’s causing a stir. It’s also creating some good buzz for the new album.
New Look, Same Band
AFI, short for A Fire Inside, has a new album coming out, “Silver Bleeds the Black Sun,” on October 3. Ahead of the release, the band is doing press for the album, and lead vocalist Davey Havok shocked fans with his new look during an interview with Alternative Press for the album. Havok ditched his clean, long haired, makeup-ed look for a gray haired, mustached appearance. He looks like a member of Mastodon now instead of a punk rock band.
The makeover has people talking. In the video clip from Alternative Press, Havok, 49, discusses how AFI’s sound has evolved over the decades, going from “simply aggressive” to having “different moods.”
“It’s long been those moments that we haven’t touched on before that really excite us, that really push us forward,” he said in the interview.
“This better be the best southern rock album of all time. Davey looking like Ulysses S Grants artistic little brother,” one commenter said on the interview clip on Instagram. “It took me a second to realize this was Davey,” another commented. “Davey channeling his inner Mark Twain,” another commented. “Bro just left yoga on his way to Pilates but stopped to do a quick interview on why the new album is about chakras and breathing exercises,” one more added.
“Bro looks like Kurt Vonnegut and Ben Stiller in Happy Gilmore had a natural birth in the Newport Beach Urban Outfitters, then gave him to the Jedi Temple where he somehow became the Padawan of 14 Jedi simultaneously,” read another comment.
AFI Releases New Music
AFI is gearing up for the release of this new opus, and in advance of the new album, they released a single and music video for “Behind the Clock,” which you can watch and listen to below. The song marks the band’s first single from their first album in four years and 12th overall studio set.
In the interview with Alternative Press, Havok talked about the band’s evolution. He pointed out that AFI today isn’t going to sound like the band did starting out.
“If you look at the AFI records from the past, you can find records with a singular mood, but that mood is angst, or aggression, which is adjacent to angst,” he said. “There they were without a conversation. But as we grew and we got out of simply aggressive music, we left that. Upon leaving that, our records had all sorts of different moods within them.”
