Coldplay’s Chris Martin Says Band May Not Tour for ‘Mylo Xyloto’
Coldplay singer and lyricist doesn’t know if band will tour to support latest album
Chris Martin-led, Brit-pop band Coldplay release their latest assortment of songs, Mylo Xyloto, on Tuesday (Oct. 25), and the LP is Coldplay’s most electronic and eclectic yet. Mylo Xyloto , the follow-up to 2008’s Viva la Vida, spans 14 tracks, brimming with vocal chants, soaring guitars and pleasing pop melodies in true Coldplay tradition. Add to that a track featuring Rhianna, and you have a recipe for an efficacious, buzz-worthy release.
But, if you ask Martin, he has no sky-high expectations for Mylo Xyloto’s commercial success. He doesn’t even know if Coldplay are going to do a proper tour to support the issue. “It’s a question of whether there’s any demand,” Martin told USA Today. “I just don’t think you can take those things for granted — unless you’re the Stones, or Bruce.”
“If the album is a bomb,” he added, “then we’ll probably have to open a cake shop or something. We’ll wait and see.” Something tells us Coldplay’s latest won’t be a “bomb,” and Martin won’t be running a bakery any time soon. But, Martin does have a good sense of humor.
Martin and his rockmates Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion put everything they had into Mylo, churning out a concept album of sorts revolving around “a love story in a big, dark, scary city.” Debut single “Paradise” currently sits No. 9 on the BDS Alternative Radio chart. The concept, Martin says, was spawned by his reading about “about New York street writers in the ’70s.”
“… [I] became interested in the idea of how the voices of the voiceless get heard,” he added. “So you have a boy and a girl and a group of like-minded people in a sort of George Orwell-type or Kafkaesque world. But it’s hopeful, because it’s about people trying to transcend troubles.”
