Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith rocks the new Joe Satriani release

Here’s a blockbuster record on the way for next year. Joe Satriani is gearing up to release his 16th solo album, “What Happens Next,” on Jan. 12, and the set features some big names.

Satriani crafted “What Happens Next” with Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple. Satriani and Smith have a long history of performing together in Chickenfoot, the rock super group that brings together Sammy Hagar and former Van Halen bass player Michael Anthony.

Right before the album’s release, Satriani will hit the road for a tour with G3, his project that has featured everyone from Steve Vai to Eric Johnson. For the upcoming tour, G3 will feature Phil Collen of Def Leppard and John Petrucci of Dream Theater.

“I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani said in a statement. “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild – it’s everything you could want in a show.”

Not enough Satriani for you? In other news, his 2014 autobiography, “Strange Beautiful Music: A Musical Memoir,” will be reissued in paperback on Nov. 7.

In other Red Hot Chili Peppers news, the guys are currently working on their upcoming album, which will mark the follow-up to 2016’s “The Getaway.”
