Chad Smith’s daughter is getting into music, and she just appeared on the season opener of “American Idol”

It’s not uncommon to see a famous musician’s kid start to get into the spotlight and make their own name in the music business, so it should come as no surprise that a well-known rocker’s child showed up on the final auditions of “American Idol Season 20” last weekend.

That surprise second-generation musician is 20-year-old Ava Maybee, the daughter of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. She didn’t mention her famous dad during the audition, but it’s her. As it turns out, the judges were impressed, with judge Lionel Richie even saying she was a bit like famed vocalist Cher.

“You had remnants of Cher. When she’s singing, she’s down here and it’s solid,” Richie said during the show.

Another judge, Katy Perry, added, “It’s very cool. It started to really open up when the chorus hit. It’s a cool alto sound. I think if you went forward, you’d be challenged a lot,” while Luke Bryan told the singer, “I do feel like you’re an artist. I’m interested to hear and see more of what you’ve got going on.”

Smith has been very supportive of his daughter and her musical aspirations, as he’s often promoted her music on his social media accounts. So far, the Red Hot Chili Peppers haven’t licensed any of their songs to be performed on “American Idol,” but it would seem appropriate to do so now, since Ava is going forward in the process. She got three yeses from the judges and a ticket to Hollywood. Time will tell if she follows in her father’s music-making footsteps on a professional level.
