The year is coming to a close, and in the spirit of all things 2012, Entertainment Weekly has put together a new list of the best songs and lyrics this year, plus some ditties that they think shouldn’t have made it out of studio doors.

The magazine is a big fan of Fiona Apple’s latest hit. The singer-songwriter’s 2012 song “Hot Knife” took home honors for holding some of the finest lyrics of the year, according to Entertainment Weekly. Other performers who made the “best” list include Taylor Swift, Frank Ocean and RZA. “Worst” picks this year include Little Big Town, Train, Nicki Minaj, One Direction and Justin Bieber.

“Hot Knife” comes off Fiona Apple’s latest album, “The Idler Wheel…,” and features the prize-winning chorus that sings, “If I’m butter — if I’m butter/If I’m butter, then he’s a hot knife/He makes my heart a cinemascope screen/ Showing the dancing bird of paradise.” Congratulations, Fiona!
