According to Chad Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are in the writing phase of their upcoming album

Red Hot Chili Peppers have some new tunes cooking. According to a new interview with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith in Billboard, the band is “just starting to write and get in the groove of things.”

The writing process is actually one of Smith’s favorite things about making music. “This is my favorite time, being creative, coming up with ideas,” he said. “You go there at 11 o’clock with something that wasn’t a piece of music, everyone collaborates on something, three hours later you’ve got something that’s a piece of music that wasn’t there before.”

Smith also says the new album will bring a fresh sound for the Peppers. “We’re always trying to change and grow and do new stuff…and you never know what that is going to be,” he said. “And I’m already hearing stuff that I know people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, that’s something different that I haven’t heard them do before.’ It’s gonna sound like us, but it’s gonna be different.”

No release date has been set for the new tunes yet.

In other Smith news, the Chili Peppers drummer will take on Will Ferrell in a much-publicized drum-off this Thursday (May 22) on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The drum-off came after months of the two “twins” daring each other for a contest.
