The new Gorillaz album is coming along swimmingly, says Damon Albarn

Cartoon rockers Gorillaz are working on a new album, and frontman Damon Albarn is offering up some news about the new songs.

“So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy,” Albarn told Rolling Stone. “I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.”

Gorillaz released their last album, “The Fall,” in 2010 as a free download exclusively for members of the group’s fan club. The album was widely released in the spring of 2011.

In other news, Albarn is on tour with his other band, Blur, which unlike Gorillaz, is not a virtual band. The band will headline New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the first time on Oct. 23.

“I’m excited,” Albarn said. “I’ve always felt that we deserve at least one reasonably-sized gig in New York. “ He added that playing Madison Square Garden was “something we dreamed about back in the early days,” but that they never did it.

Gorillaz rose to popularity in 2005 with their hit single “Feel Good Inc.”
