Stone Sour show off both a heavy edge and melodic side with their new songs

Stone Sour have a new studio album on the way, “Hydrograd,” and Corey Taylor and the gang have unleashed not one but two new tunes from the upcoming set.

The album’s first single, “Fabuless,” shows off the heavier side of Stone Sour, while “Song #3” reflects the band’s melodic hard rock roots.

“Fabuless” kicks off with raging guitars and Taylor’s growling vocals. The song, perhaps due to Taylor’s broadening vocals or the building guitar lines, is somewhat reminiscent of Taylor’s other band, Slipknot. But Stone Sour is certainly its own entity, and when the track hits the chorus, the band’s unique personality comes out.

“I can’t recall the last time I was caught between the walls / Those razors in the pillowcases seem to cut em all / But old foes, dead things, take a toll / Remember, it’s just a game,” Taylor sings at the offset.

In contrast, “Song #3” is a heartfelt, melodic tune, more in the vein of Stone Sour’s “Through Glass” and “Bothers” works. This track has massive, catchy hooks and a big, swelling chorus that makes you want to listen to the track over and over. The lyrics tell the tale of a passionate love story of sorts, as Taylor croons, “If you cried out for more / If you reached out for me / I would run into the storm / Just to keep you here with me / I have gone beyond my years / I’ve wasted half my life / But I found it all in you / Did I save you cause I know you saved me too.”

“Hydrograd” will arrive June 30. Those who pre-order the set on iTunes will get instant downloads of both “Song #3” and “Fabuless.”

Stone Sour will hit the road in support of “Hydrograd” in May, kicking off with a stop at Rock on the Range’s kickoff party May 18 in Columbus, Ohio. The guys will also tour with Korn this summer on Korn’s Serenity of Summer tour, which sets off June 16 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
