A Tool show is more than a Tool show– it’s an event.
That’s especially true when the band hasn’t been in town for nearly a decade, which was the case Wednesday night (June 7) at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, just outside of Detroit.
Tool — whose last Detroit-area show was in July of 2007 at the same venue — carry a unique, majestic statesmanship and presence onstage. That came out as soon as the band took the stage, playing to a sold-out amphitheatre crowd of more than 15,000.
From dazzling, colorful lights and backdrops to deep, dark grooves, the gents of Tool — Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor — had the crowd in a trance from the get-go. It’s easy to get lost in a Tool song just listening at home. That said, it’s impossible not to get hypnotized by the band’s tracks live in concert.
Keenen spent some timing living in Michigan, and his admiration for the state showed in his many references to how good it felt to be “home,” if even for just a day.
The crowd sent that love right back. The cheers from the audience increased with each new song, from “The Pot” to “Schism.”

Tool remains on the road this year through a June 23 show in Sacramento, California.
