Metallica are filming a special, full-length concert, which will debut at drive-in movie theaters across North America

Metallica have announced their first concert of 2020– kind of. The longstanding metal band is filming a new, full-length concert at a secret location, which will screen at local drive-in theaters around the world as part of the Encore Drive-In Nights series.

The Encore Drive-In Nights have been taking place across the North America for a few months, but Metallica is the first metal or rock act to participate. Until now, the series has highlighted mainly country artists.

“We’ve been rehearsing at HQ for a show that will be shot specially for the drive-ins at a location nearby later this week,” Metallica said in a statement. “Then we’ll pass it off to our award-winning production team to then be edited and mixed at the highest standards possible to be beamed into your cars from the big screen.”

The concert will debut on Aug. 29. Tickets for the drive-in shows go on sale this Friday (Aug. 14) at noon local time. A special pre-sale for members of Metallica’s Fifth Member fan club is happening prior to Friday.

Those who purchase tickets to the drive-in experience will also get full digital downloads of Metallica’s upcoming “S&M2” album.
