Weezer Frontman Rivers Cuomo is Writing a Film Musical with ‘American Idiot’ Broadway Producer
Rivers Cuomo is working on a movie film with the producer behind Green Day’s “American Idiot” Broadway producer
Rivers Cuomo isn’t your average rock star. After all, not many rock stars have graduated from Harvard University, which Cuomo did in 2008 with an English degree. That said, it’s not surprising that Cuomo has been using his time on lockdown to work on a bevy of interesting projects, including two new Weezer albums and a web programming class.
As it turns out, the Weezer frontman is also working on another big project: a full-fledged movie musical. Speaking with The Forty-Five, Cuomo explained that the film is named “Buddha Superstar,” and he’s working on it with the Broadway producer behind Green Day’s blockbuster Broadway musical, “American Idiot,” which was based on Green Day’s album by the same title.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long,” Cuomo said of the musical venture. “I think I just needed somebody else to come along and really encourage me.”
Cuomo also dished that Weezer is currently working on a four-part album series dedicated to each of the four seasons. The first “season” is expected to drop spring 2022.
“I think they’re going to be eight songs apiece,” Cuomo stated. “They’re called Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, and together they’re called Weezer Seasons.”
When it comes to standing out and being different, Cuomo champions his musical uniqueness. “I think I’ve really accepted the fact that I am just really different from most people,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how hard I try, I’m never going to be a mainstream artist. My brain doesn’t work that way. Better to just be the best version of myself.”
Weezer released a new album in January, the orchestral “OK Human,” whose name is a reference to Radiohead’s famed “OK Computer” album. The guitar-heavy counterpart to “OK Human,” “Van Weezer,” a reference to Van Halen, will drop May 7. Both albums were among Audio Ink Radio’s Most Anticipated Albums of 2021 in Rock and Metal.
