Gwen Stefani Releases New Song, ‘Slow Clap,’ with a Reggae Feel
Gwen Stefani mixes reggae, hip-hop and pop with her new single, ‘Slow Clap’
No Doubt frontwoman and pop superstar Gwen Stefani has released a new solo single, “Slow Clap,” which is available now via digital retailers through Interscope Records. Stefani co-wrote “Slow Clap” with songwriter and producer Ross Golan and songwriter Luke Niccoli, the same duo that worked with her on her 2020 single, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.”
“Slow Clap” is a breezy, feel-good pop song with deep grooves and accents of reggae and hip-hop. The song’s lyrics are about feeling like the underdog but still having confidence and resilience, as she sings, “Been the champion, rang the bell / Rocked the bottom, been through hell,” she sings. “Climbed the mountain, now I’m well / I just feel like coming back for the belt.” Listen to the song below.
Stefani’s previous single, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself,” dropped late last year and hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart when it was released. In a statement, Stefani said of the song, “It’s a fun, lighthearted song, because I got inspired and hopefully to bring a little bit of joy. The idea was to write a song that had a bit of a nostalgic feeling to it, so I think musically it reminds you of back in the day, going back to where I started musically which was with ska and reggae. I’m still the same me but here’s something a little bit new in case you feel like hearing a little bit more of me.”
Stefani was also a presence on the country charts in 2020, scoring two No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with fiancé Blake Shelton, “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” She also reissued her holiday album, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas,” adding the new, original Christmas song, “Here This Christmas,” co-written by Ryan Tedder.
A press release from Stefani’s camp also teases more new tunes, stating, “she plans to release more music this year.”
