Prince Classic ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ Gets Covered by Dirty Honey
Watch Los Angeles rockers Dirty Honey perform Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” at the NHL Winter Classic
Dirty Honey were selected to perform at the NHL Winter Classic hockey game, which took place New Year’s Day in Minneapolis. For the event, the California rockers chose to cover a Prince classic, “Let’s Go Crazy.” Watch footage below.
It’s safe to say Dirty Honey blew away many in the crowd, as the band put their own, high-octane spin on the Prince tune amid freezing temperatures. Dirty Honey is from Los Angeles, so they surely weren’t used to the weather, but you’d never know it watching them barrel through the performance.
The NHL Winter Classic takes occurs annually on New Year’s Day and features two teams going head-to-head in an outdoor rink. As it turns out, former NHL player Tyler Lassiter recommended Dirty Honey to perform on TNT at this year’s Winter Classic.
“I found out about Dirty Honey through former NHL player Scottie Upshall and have been a fan of the band ever since,” Turner Sports’ Tyler Lassiter, who directed the video alongside Craig Murray, said. “I had read that [singer] Marc LaBelle was a big hockey guy, and as soon as we landed the NHL deal on TNT earlier this year, my first thought was that we would do something with these guys at some point.”
He added, “When we came up with this concept, all the stars seemed to align. We needed a band who could faithfully pull off a legit Prince cover as well as one passionate enough to agree to shoot on a frozen lake in northern Minnesota in mid-December. The boys crushed it.”
Dirty Honey also recorded a studio version of “Let’s Go Crazy” at NRG Studios in Los Angeles, mixed by Chris Lord-Alge. That song is currently available on digital platforms via Dirt Records. Listen to the tune below.
In other news, the group will hit the road on a North American headlining tour with Mammoth WVH, the band featuring Wolfgang Van Halen. For more information on the Mammoth WVH, Dirty Honey tour, go here. Watch Audio Ink Radio’s recent video interview with Dirty Honey here.
