Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, White Stripes Among 2023 Rock Hall Nominees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced its list of 2023 nominees, and a few rock and metal names are on the tally. Last year, Judas Priest were finally inducted into the Rock Hall, after plenty of complains about the Hall not honoring enough heavy acts. Now, when it comes to heavy metal, on this year’s ballot are metal greats Iron Maiden, who have snagged their second overall nomination.
As for rockers, 1990s rap-rock mainstays Rage Against the Machine and grunge icons Soundgarden are up for nomination once again, in addition to The White Stripes. Elsewhere on the list, new wave bands Joy Division and New Order also nominated, but they’re actually proposed as a joint act, which is interesting. New Order were created by the surviving members of Joy Division following the passing of vocalist Ian Curtis, so that’s why the two are lumped together, although it’s still a curious decision.
Other acts nominated don’t fit inside the rock ‘n’ roll genre include Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson and more. The Hall’s new mission statement explains the increased inclusivity, stating, “Born from the collision of rhythm and blues, country, and gospel, rock and roll is a spirit that is inclusive and ever-changing.
Those on the ballot for the first time include Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott (first time eligible), Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes (first time eligible) and Warren Zevon. As for who is eligible, the Rock Hall states, “To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.”
