“This Is Spinal Tap” is one of those crazy cult classics that every metal fan simply has to see. Even if you aren’t a fan of heavy metal, this show is hilarious and really sums up the idea of 1980s glam-rock getting too big and too ridiculous. Now, this amazing comedy classic is finally getting a proper Spinal Tap sequel.

The original “This Is Spinal Tap” director Rob Reiner dropped the news about a sequel while guesting on the “RHLSTP with Richard Herring” podcast. Now, the original film came out in 1984, so one might think that the original actors wouldn’t be the right fit for the sequel, since they’re about 40 years older than they were then. But, you’d be wrong, because the sequel, indeed, will feature the original members of the biggest heavy metal band in the world, Spinal Tap, including David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Plus, this time around, major rock starts such as Elton John, Paul McCartney and Garth Brooks will appear in the film. Just seeing all these guys together again is going to make for a hilarious sequel. My question is, what took them so long?

This isn’t the first time news has broken about a “Spinal Tap” sequel. The folks behind the film originally announce it at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. So, when will the “This Is Spinal Tap” sequel come out? The film will go into production in February 2024, and there’s no word yet on a release date. The story line will reportedly mirror Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz,” the popular concert film that documented the final concert of The Band before their big breakup.

So, what makes now the right time for this sequel? According to Reiner, “The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

Before the “This Is Spinal Tap” movie, the joke band Spinal Tap made their first appearance a sketch special called “The T.V. Show” from 1979. Then, “This Is Spinal Tap” the movie arrived in 1984. While it wasn’t an Academy Award-winning type of film, the movie was hugely popular with music fans around the world. Many of those fans are still around today, and then, of course, there’s a whole new generation of metal heads who have seen the film just in the past few decades.

Spinal Tap, the actual band, released an album, “Break Like the Wind,” in 1992. They followed that up in 2009 with “Back From the Dead.” A lot of people actually don’t know that Spinal Tap has actual albums out there, but they do, and Spinal Tap is even Grammy nominated. Now that the news of a sequel is out there, all we can do is wait in anticipation for what’s likely going to be a really funny watch.
