Here are some Grammy predictions for 2024 in the rock and metal categories

The 2024 Grammy Awards nominees were announced about a week ago, and when it comes to rock and metal, they actually got something right. While often time, some head-scratchers will end up on the nominations list in the rock and metal categories, this year, there’s no denying that these acts rock.

Seriously. Remember when Mumford & Sons was considered rock? Sorry, but those guys are not rock. They don’t even have guitars. Each year, I always brace for the shocking artists that are going to be included in the rock and metal nominations that aren’t really rock or metal. But, this year is different.

Metallica have the highest number of nominations for a metal act with three. That totally makes sense, as their 2023 record, “72 Seasons,” was not-so-arguably the biggest metal album of the year. As for Best Metal Performance category, “72 Seasons” will go up against Disturbed’s “Bad Man,” Ghost’s cover of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” Slipknot’s “Hive Mind” and Spiritbox’s “Jaded.” Among these picks, I’m predicting it’s between Metallica and Ghost, as the Grammy committee seems to love both bands.

In the Best Rock Album category, Metallica’s “72 Seasons” is duking it out against Foo Fighters’ “But Here We Are,” Greta Van Fleet’s “Starcatcher,” Paramore’s “This Is Why” and Queens of the Stone Age’s “In Time New Roman…” My money is on Dave Grohl and the Foos in this category.

Finally, in the Best Performance Song category, Metallica’s “Lux Æterna” is up against Arctic Monkeys’ “Sculptures of Anything Goes,” Black Pumas’ “More Than a Love Song,” boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough” and Foo Fighters’ “Rescued.”

Looking at the Best Rock Song category, those nominees include The Rolling Stones (“Angry”), Olivia Rodrigo (“Ballad of a Homeschool Girl”), Queens of the Stone Age (“Emotion Sickness”), boygenius (“Not Strong Enough”) and Foo Fighters (“Rescued”).

The 66th Grammy Awards are set for Feb. 4 and will air live on CBS. View the metal and rock nominations below.
