This Act Could Come Out of Retirement for a Las Vegas Residency
U2’s residency at the new Sphere in Las Vegas is drawing plenty of attention, and it’s also continually selling out. The residency is scheduled to run through early March 2024. U2’s residency also kicked off the opening of the Sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to build and opened this past September. Well, all the buzz has more acts in talks to get their own Las Vegas residencies at the Sphere.
So, who’s the latest act rumored to get a Las Vegas residency? This one actually surprises me. I thought it would be a pop act, but it’s not.
Dead & Company are reportedly in negotiations to have their own residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas in Summer 2024. The news comes from the New York Post, which reports that sources have told them the possible residency would happen “next summer” but added that negotiations are “still in the works and not 100%.” It’s also worth noting that Dead & Company are represented by Irving Azoff, who also represents U2 and was once a partner and collaborator with Sphere CEO James Dolan.
More Acts in Talks to Get a Las Vegas Residency
Following U2’s residency ending in March 2024, are slated for a week-long residency. Another major act who is reportedly in talks with headlining shows at the Sphere is Beyonce. Let’s face it: Having Beyonce at the venue would be a huge draw. She recently wrapped up her Renaissance World Tour, which ran from May 10, 2023, to Oct. 1, 2023, and next to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, it was the hottest ticket of the summer.
That’s not all, though. In another report, the New York Post lists other acts who have “been considered” for a Sphere residency, including Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney and Bon Jovi. But, according to the “insiders” in the new article, the Sphere’s high-tech amenities, such as its mega LCD screen, have made the cost of producing a show there very high, which can be prohibitive for some artists.
Back to the Dead & Company rumors. What would make this booking even more appealing? Well, Dead & Company recently wrapped up their farewell tour with a final concert in San Francisco, California. So, the Sphere dates would be a quick reunion for the guys. The final songs the band played live were “Truckin’,” “Brokedown Palace” and “Not Fade Away.” However, even though the band called this their farewell tour, they always said they’d stay open to additional shows, just not a full-fledged tour. So, this Sphere residency could be the exception.
Meanwhile, Dead & Company member John Mayer has stayed busy on a solo tour. He has a handful of solo dates lined up for next March in Europe. So, the Sphere residency would obviously have to fit around Mayer’s current tour schedule, which should give fans some insight into when the residency may, or may not, take place.
Dead & Company is a Grateful Dead supergroup featuring Mayer along with Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmannp. The group also features musicians Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.
