Anthrax’s Charlie Benante and Butcher Babies’ Carla Harvey Get Engaged in Adorable Way
Boy, rock stars sure know how to get engaged. Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and Butcher Babies vocalist Carla Harvey got engaged on Saturday (Jan. 27), and they did it in the most adorable manner. The two got engaged while attending U2’s big show at the Sphere in Las Vegas. How cute is that? Those who metal together stay together.
Both Benante and Harvey took to Instagram to share their good news. Both of them shared pictures from the show, one of them being a silhouetted image of the couple in the audience for U2. The next photo showed Harvey with an engagement ring on her left hand.
“We went to see @u2 and this happened ? @carlaharvey,” Benante wrote. “They played ‘All I Want Is You’ … ??. Oh yeah, thanks to #bono #theedge #adamclayton #larrymullenjr (even tho he wasn’t there).”
Harvey’s caption said, “It wasn’t a dream. I woke up in Vegas as the future Mrs. Benante ??? I love you @charbenante ??.”
After the shares, a bunch of rock stars and metalheads started congratulating the happy couple, including Gary Holt, Rex Brown, Mike Portnoy, Heidi Shepherd and more. Shepherd, of course, is Harvey’s co-vocalist in Butcher Babies.
Benante and Harvey have been together for several years. In 2021, Benante spoke with me about how they met and eventually became an item. He said they met each other on the festival circuit and happened to have a lot in common, such as dark art. “We were both kind of interested in the same type of things, like goofy, nerdy s***,” he said.
Even though the two shared a lot of interests, they didn’t get together right away. They were both in other relationships, he says, and kept in touch strictly as friends, just occasionally checking in over email. Then, they both found themselves singles, and, “One day, I was in L.A. making a record, and I hit her up, and I said, ‘You wanna meet around here, go get a coffee or something?’ And, she turned me down. And then I hit her back up a little bit later, and she’s like, ‘Okay, I’ve to got to go to the art store in that area. Do you wanna come with me? And we ended up going to an art store. And that was it.” So, that’s the story of their romance.
When will the wedding happen? That remains to be seen. Benante is pretty busy this year, since in addition to Anthrax, he also plays drums in the revamped Pantera lineup. The metal greats will set off on a North American tour with Lamb of God in early February. They’ll also be on the road serving as support on select dates on Metallica’s tour later this year.
As for Anthrax, the guys have been working long and hard on a new album, that’s expected to arrive sometime later this year. The guys also have some festival shows and one-off international dates lined up.
