Tool New Album Update: Justin Chancellor Gives Fans Hope
It’s a new year, and a lot of Tool fans are wondering if this is the year the band finally releases new music. I mean, I guess it hasn’t been that long, if you compare this drought to the years between Tool’s other albums. Their last studio album, “Fear Inoculum,” came out in 2019, so it’s been about five years. Before then, Tool took a whopping 13 years between records. But, I have good news for Tool fans everywhere, as there’s a new Tool album update from Justin Chancellor.
Tool are on the road for much of the beginning of 2024. So, they’re definitely active this year, just not in the studio. The band will embark on a fresh US arena tour on Wednesday (Jan. 10) in Baltimore, Maryland, and then travel to the UK and Europe in late May. Thankfully, after those tour dates wrap up, they’ll have some time to create. Chancellor says he thinks the band will enter the studio to start recording a follow-up to “Fear Inoculum” in the “second half of the year.”
Heavy Consequence recently spoke with Chancellor about his project MTVoid. Of course, the conversation switched to a new Tool album update. It’s totally the elephant in the room, right? He told Heavy Consequence about Tool’s plans for upcoming music.
“Well, there’s a lot to be put together,” Chancellor said. “We have, as usual, loads of ideas, loads of stuff that didn’t get used — constantly writing new stuff. I write something, I immediately know it’s for Tool. It sounds the right way.”
Then, Chancellor said something even better, if you’re someone who wants new Tool music. He said that the time between releases shouldn’t be as long as the 13 years between “10,000 Days” and “Fear Inoculum.” That’s music to my ears. “I’d say by June we’re going to be back home after Europe, and the second half of the year we’re going to get in and give it another go to try and put some of it together,” he said ”
“We’re not going to be taking so much time over it if we’re going to do an album. We’re going to figure out how to do it a little bit quicker.”
In an interview in last 2023 with Loudwire, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan said that Tool definitely plan to release new music. But, he said he didn’t want to get ahead of himself. “I never mention anything until we actually have it in our hands because every time I say it out loud, it runs farther away, like ‘Groundhog Day,'” he told Loudwire. “To get people wound up and excited about something that doesn’t exist, I think it’s irresponsible.”
Tool’s most recent string of shows happened when the band closed out their fall North American tour late last year. After they kick off their upcoming tour in Baltimore, the band will close out their winter US run with a Feb. 18 date in Las Vegas, Nevada. Find Tool’s upcoming North American tour dates here. While the live shows are cool, I, for one, am excited to get a new Tool album.
