Linkin Park Have a New Singer and Sound
It’s been obvious that Linkin Park has been gearing up for some big news, but I don’t think fans were expecting quite what they got on Thursday (Sept. 5). The band took to social media for livestream performance to announce a new lineup, album, tour and release a new single. It was, well, a lot. Fans, of course, are divided on the move. Many can’t imagine Linkin Park without the late, great Chester Bennington, while others are happy for some activity from the band.
Linkin Park to Release ‘FROM ZERO’ in November
Linkin Park will release their first studio album since 2017, “FROM ZERO,” on Nov. 15. Fans can already pre-order/pre-save the set via Warner Records.
Regarding the new lineup, it features a female vocalist, Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara, and new drummer in Colin Brittain. Previous Linkin Park members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix and Joe Hahn are also in the fold.
Linkin Park has also released a new song, “The Emptiness Machine,” which you can stream or download on all platforms and below. It’s a totally different sound for the band. They sound less atmospheric and more, well, meat-and-potatoes alternative rock.
“Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero,” Shinoda said in a statement. “This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what Linkin Park has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”
As for the new lineup, Shinoda said, “The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created. We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”
Linkin Park also have a collection of tour dates lined up, albeit not many. Those dates are Sept. 11 in Los Angeles, Sept. 16 in New York City, Sept. 22 in Germany, Sept. 24 in the U.K., Sept. 28 in South Korea and Nov. 11 in Columbia.
Last month, Linkin Park began teasing some news that appeared to be slated to drop on Aug. 28. It ended up not dropping on that date, and the band soon announced that they would announce something big on Sept. 5.
For a while, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was believed to be the new Linkin Park frontman, because he was teasing a big announcement around the same time. But, Whibley took to social media to share the news that, no, he wasn’t Linkin Park’s new vocalist. So, it was just a coincidence.
“I feel the need to dispel some current rumors,” the Sum 41 singer posted on his social media accounts. “It’s been brought to my attention that many people think I could be joining a reuniting band. But I just want to say, despite popular belief, I am not joining Oasis… or Linkin Park. Or any other band for that matter.”
Bennington sadly took his own life on July 20, 2017, at the age of 41.
