New Mumford & Sons Has a Black Sabbath Vibe, Bassist Says
Mumford & Sons are focused on the follow-up to 2010’s, Sigh No More
While it would be easy for British folk-rock group Mumford & Sons to sit back and bask in the glow of their recent Grammy Award nominations, including the coveted Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “The Cave,” the guys are looking forward. Bass player Ted Dwane says the guys are simply looking forward. The indie rock quartet are working as hard as ever on the follow-up to 2010’s Sigh No More, and the new album is shaping up to sound quite different from traditional Mumford & Sons fare.
“[It’s] certainly more mature, I’d say,” Dwane told Rolling Stone of the record, which is almost a wrap. “The second record is just a reflection of our mindsets, where we’re all at. It’s doom folk, kind of like Black Sabbath meets Nick Drake.”
Mumford & Sons hope to get the album out soon, although the set has yet to see a name and release date. “We spent a week in Nashville just writing, the four of us, kind of getting together any individual song ideas we had and playing them out. And then we did the same a few weeks ago down in the west country in the U.K.,” keyboard player Ben Lovett says of the album’s progress. “Even though we’re right in the heart of it, even in the studio sometimes doesn’t feel as free as it is just playing together. It’s brilliant.” Inspiration-wise, Dwane says motivation this time around came from the band’s sentiments, not thoughts: “It should come from emotions in your heart, not so much your head.”
