San Diego Christian hard rock quartet P.O.D. (Payable on Death) saw a big 2011, as the guys got back together with original guitarist Marcos Curiel and set out on the summer’s blockbuster Rock Allegiance Tour alongside Buckcherry, Papa Roach, RED, Puddle of Mudd, Crossfade and Drive A.

Now, Curiel, vocalist Sonny Sandoval, drummer Wuv Bernardo and bass player Traa Daniels are putting their infectious rap-rock grooves on a new album, and they’re currently recording with producer Howard Benson (Daughtry, Three Days Grace), who manned the knobs for the band’s 2011 breakout album, Satellite. Looking back, Satellite shook the metal world in 2002, thanks to its sincerity and original mix of heaviness and heart. From the sound of P.O.D.’s new tracks, the guys are poised to spit out another inspirational set that serves as a rallying call for heavy music fans who want music about optimism, not misery.

Sandoval tells Audio Ink Radio to expect the forthcoming album — the band’s first on Razor & Tie Records — to drop as early as spring 2012. “I keep hearing them tentatively saying the beginning of year, so maybe March,” he said. “ … If the album comes out in March-ish, we could have a single out by the summertime and hit the summer fests and get back in the loop. Time to go work again. [Laughs]”

He added that, per usual, the upcoming assortment centers around positivity, not pessimism. “You have so many artists who just want to sing about depressing things all the time or that life sucks, or sometimes we tour with all these metal bands and they’re talking about all these evil and wicked things, and they’re living the high life,” he said. “They don’t believe in those things, but that stuff sells, and it makes them cool, and we just see through the façade of all of that.

“We’ve always been ghetto from the beginning! [Laughs] We’re four guys from the hood who just picked up instruments and started playing, and people started responding to it. It’s been real. We’ve been one of the hardest working bands since the beginning, and we did things independently, and all of a sudden the record label saw us and gave us a chance, so we’ve been working at it. … Now it just comes down to making music for the people.” Watch P.O.D.’s homespun music video for, “On Fire,” on the artist page.
