Soundgarden Album Put on Hold – 2012 New Album Outlook
New Soundgarden album gets pushed back to fall 2012 release
For months, Soungarden frontman Chris Cornell has stated time and time again that the band’s new album was set to drop this spring, but that prediction was a bit premature, as the gifted grunge singer has announced the new album is getting pushed back to a fall 2012 release. Cornell broke the news to Triple M Radio this week. At least they’re still shooting for this year!
As for the sounds on the new Soundgarden set, Cornell says the collection is neither “nostalgic” nor “retro,” and that he doesn’t see it suggestive of Soundgarden going back to their roots. “I don’t even know what that would be. Soundgarden has always been so eclectic,” he explained. “To me, it’s a continuation or in a sense it’s almost like picking up where we left off.”
Soundgarden are current on the road in Australia, and they have European gigs planned for the next few months. Late last year, Cornell took some time away from Soundgarden to play a round of solo, acoustic U.S. tour dates, and the jaunt helped him reconnect with his core. “For me personally, maybe there’s an ability to be more emotional,” he told Spinner. “I don’t think that makes as much difference to me as it does to the listeners. That’s because for me, they’re my lyrics,” he added. “I wrote them. I’m singing them. So even in the context of, for example, a Soundgarden or Audioslave show where it’s very loud and there’s a lot of competing with the singing, it’s kind of competing with focus on what’s being sung.”
In other Cornell news, the singer recently signed on to play a fundraiser for President Barack Obama at his Feb. 16 benefit show in San Francisco to help raise campaign funds for the 2012 presidential election.
