Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard Auctions Mandolin for Charity
Seattle Goodwill auctioning off Stone Gossard’s former mandolin
Pearl Jam do-gooder guitarist Stone Gossard is once again using his celebrity to help a good cause. The rhythm guitar guru, who is one of the founding members of Pearl Jam, is auctioning off his electric mandolin as a benefit for non-profit charity organization Seattle Goodwill.
“Seattle is a small enough town that we were able to get in touch with Stone for confirmation that this had, in fact, been his mandolin at one time,” Seattle Goodwill states on the auction’s official eBay page. “He has now graciously shared it with us to support Seattle Goodwill’s programs. Here’s your chance to own a museum quality piece of rock and roll history.”
The mandolin features some small illustrations sketched by a young Gossard and reads “Send Back Please / Stone Gossard – Thanks” in Gossard’s writing. As for its condition, the mandolin has some wiring issues and did not work when testers hooked it up to an amp. The auction’s site adds that the binding is “a bit discolored with one small crack, and there is a little wear to the finish near the tailpiece,” and there appears to be some “dried adhesive around the pickup and the tone knob and pickguard feel slightly loose.”
The fretboard is in good condition, with little wear. Overall, the mandolin is in “good, used shape with some light scratches, scuffs and tiny nicks due to play throughout the years,” states the site. The current bid was $1,475 as of Thursday (Feb. 23) morning. The bidding ends Thursday (Feb. 23) at 6:31 p.m. ET.
