Kid Rock on Detroit Symphony: ‘I am proud to be supporting this longstanding cultural institution’

Kid Rock is out to save Detroit, one rockin’ concert at a time. The Detroit native has announced he will perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at a special benefit show at the Fox Theatre in on May 12 to help raise money and support for the symphony, according to the Detroit Free Press. The orchestra is commissioning arrangements for the concert from Rob Mathes, who has also orchestrated arrangements for Mary J. Blige and Sting, so as odd a Kid Rock performing with the symphony may sound, it will probably turn out killer.

Quicken Loans chairman Dan Gilbert first had the idea to put together the show. He contacted Kid Rock with the goal to help settle the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s six-month strike last year. Gilbert talked Kid Rock into playing the benefit, which probably didn’t take too much convincing, since Kid Rock is such a supporter of everything Detroit. The orchestra hopes to raise $1 million with the event.

“As a musician, and of course a Detroiter, I am proud to be supporting this longstanding cultural institution,” Rock said in an official statement. “And while I know these ticket prices are more than what my fans are used to paying, I am confident that whatever happens when we put the Twisted Brown Trucker Band, an 80-piece orchestra, and ‘Bawitdaba’ together will be well worth the price of admission.”

Tickets for the concert will go on sale starting on Saturday, and they’ll put you back anywhere from $100 to $350. The symphony will also be offering a special V.I.P. package, which includes admission to an after-party, for $1,500.
