Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Talks Rocket Juice & the Moon Album
Flea, Damon Albarn and Tony Allen release debut Rocket Juice & the Moon album today
Rocket Juice & the Moon — the supergroup featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Albarn’s former the Good, The Bad & The Queen colleague Tony Allen — drop their debut album today (March 27). Even though band members comes from a wide range of musical backgrounds, Flea says the album came together smoothly and naturally.
“The Rocket Juice album was made with no preconceived plan,” Flea told Metro.co.uk. “The playing never felt like a means to an end. We totally improvised over a few meetings, left it wild so it feels cosmic and loose. I love to just jam; my life mission is to play music in the moment.”
Once Flea, Albarn and Allen got together in the same room, Flea says the musical interaction was magnetic. “Everyone here’s so open, ‘whatever happens’ is the orthodoxy. Damon and Tony are two musicians I admired plenty before I worked with them,” he explained. “Damon’s an amazing musician, and his storytelling ability on a song like ‘Poison’ seems to be in his blood. And Tony, man, he’s just a treasure. He’ll lay down this funky wicked groove and I just want to get into the middle of it. It’s like being freezing, then immersing yourself into a hot bath.”
In Peppers news, the funk-rock boys will be inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April. The show, set to take place on April 14, will happen at Cleveland’s Public Hall. HBO will air the show in early May.
