Los Angeles funk rockers offer free five-song live EP online

Aside from their catchy-cool funk-rock jams, the guys of Red Hot Chili Peppers seem like downright nice dudes. Now, singer Anthony Kiedis, bass player Flea, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer are showing off their kind-hearted side by giving fans a free five-song live EP on the Peppers’ website. Fans can submit their email addresses and, in turn, will score a free download of the EP, which offers live versions of songs taped during last year’s lengthy European tour.

Smith hand-picked the EP’s track list, which includes original live performances of classic Peppers tracks “Give It Away” and “If You Have to Ask” from the Los Angeles rock outfit’s 1991 album “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” chart-topper “Dani California” from 2006’s “Stadium Arcadium” and “Look Around” and “Monarchy of Roses” from their group’s latest full-length, “I’m With You.” So, it’s a mix of the old and new.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers broke out in the ‘80s, bringing a unique, funk punk sound that broke musical barriers and changed alternative and popular music forever. By mixing the style and diction of funk with the energy of punk, and Peppers earn a reputation as one of the hottest live acts of their era. With all that history, it’s no wonder the guys have been chosen to get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April. The ceremony will happen April 14 Cleveland’s Public Hall, and it will be broadcast on HBO in early May.
