U2, Arctic Monkeys and More Featured on Olympic Opening Ceremony CD
CD will feature music of the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony
Thirty six songs were featured during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, and fans who want to relive the excitement already have the option to purchase the entire set as a digital download. Now, fans will also be able to get their ears on a special double-CD set on Aug. 28.
The opening ceremony soundtrack, called “Isles of Wonder,” includes many of the songs performing during the 2012 opening ceremony, including U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name,” Arctic Monkeys’ “I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor,” the Chemical Brothers’ “Galvanize,” David Bowie’s “Heroes,” the Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls,” High Contrast’s “Moon Watcher” and Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells.” Not every performer who played on the ceremony appears on the soundtrack. For example, Paul McCartney is missing from the set. But, most of the performances are featured.
“Music is Britain’s cultural heartbeat; it’s a perpetual act of revolutionary thought,” music director Rick Smith said in a release. “From William Blake to the Beatles via the Clash and the Chemical brothers, the soundtrack to our lives fizzes and hums all around us like a stray signal from a radio dial that your internal antenna just can’t help but tune into.”
Sales expectations for “Isles of Wonder” are big. When the digital edition of the album was released, it entered the iTunes album charts at No. 1 in Britain, Belgium, France and Spain and reached No. 5 in the U.S.
