Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley Memorial Fund Marathon Set for November
Late Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley’s Memorial Fund to benefit from Amica Seattle Marathon
Fans and followers of late, great Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley may want to mark Nov. 25 on their calendars. That’s the day the Amica Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon take place, and one of the groups set to benefit is Therapeutic Health Services — an organization with the purpose to “rehabilitate individuals and heal families affected by alcohol dependence, drug dependence or mental illness” — in conjunction with the Layne Staley Memorial Fund.
The Layne Staley Memorial Fund was started in 2002 in memory of Staley. The fund “provides hope, education, support and treatment funds for heroin recovery in the Seattle music community, through Therapeutic Health Services,” according to an official statement.
Staley was the frontman for Alice in Chains, as well as Mad Season and Class of ’99. He died of a drug overdose in 2002. Following his death, his parents Nancy McCallum and Phil Staley started getting donations from fans everywhere, so the two decided to work with Therapeutic Health Services to start the Layne Staley Memorial Fund. Nancy looked at the fund as a way of “partnering with Layne on the next step in his work. He was very honest with people about the effects of drug use, urging them not to follow in his footsteps. Those were the messages in his songs, endearing him to his fans.”
The Fund is constructed so that just the interest from donations is put towards treatment, so that the money is always at work. For more information and to donate, visit Crowd Rise’s website.
