Andrew W.K. scores new world record for playing drums 24 hours straight at Oakley’s in New York City

Andrew W.K. has set a new world record. On Thursday (June 20), the party-happy singer-songwriter successfully realized his objective of playing the drums for 24 hours straight at Oakley’s retail shop in New York City’s Times Square, notching a new Guinness World Record.

Andrew W.K.’s goal was part of MTV’s O Music Awards, which took place last night. Shortly following the musician’s 24-hour drumming spurt, he was formally named the world record holder of the “Longest Drum Session in a Retail Store.”

The performer wasn’t alone during his pursuit. While playing, a crop of other drummers stopped by the shop, including Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, the Roots’ Questlove, the Ramones’ Marky Ramone, Hanson’s Zac Hanson and ex-Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto. Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. also stopped by the festivities.

Last year’s O Music Awards brought another Guinness World Record, with the Flaming Lips setting a new high for the most concerts performed in multiple cities over a 24-hour period.

As for his actual MTV awards at the O Music Awards, Andrew W.K. took home top honors for must-follow artist on Twitter. View the full list of award winners via the O Music Awards website.
