U2’s new studio album is still slated for a 2014 release, despite the rumors otherwise

Despite recent rumors to the contrary, a rep for U2 says the band’s much-anticipated new album will arrive this year. In a recent article from Billboard, a source stated that U2’s new studio release won’t be released until next year, which caused a stir for fans who were under the impression it would drop sooner. Now, a spokesperson for the band has told U.K. newspaper The Guardian that the album is still on target to be released in 2014.

“U2’s album is planned for this year, is still on track and touring plans haven’t been confirmed yet,” the rep said.

Billboard has previously reported that sources close to the legendary rock band told the magazine that band members were pushing the release date for the new album into next year in order to work with two producers they just recently had tapped for the recording: OneRepublic frontman and songwriter Ryan Tedder and Paul McCartney collaborator Paul Epworth. That same source told Billboard that U2’s upcoming tour in support of the new album was originally slated to get started in September, but is now pushed back to the summer of 2015.

U2’s new album will be the band’s follow-up to 2009’s “No Line on the Horizon.”
