Antemasque features Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea and former members of the Mars Volta

Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Flea and former members of the Mars Volta are teaming up for a new musical endeavor. The project, called Antemasque, features Flea, Dave Elitch, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. The pairing isn’t completely surprising, since the Chili Peppers and the Mars Volta have toured together on numerous occasions.

Antemasque’s upcoming self-titled debut is due out July 15, and fans can already get a taste of the album’s songs online. The band has a trailer streaming online with music clips, as well as a featurette showing the band in the studio. The band’s first single is also already out, a rock tune called “4 AM,” and it’s currently streaming via YouTube and for sale on iTunes. Due to the positive reaction from fans, Antemasque won’t be signing to a major label and instead releasing music independently. “If the whole thing looked unplanned, that’s because it was,” the band said in a statement. “The anticipation of what the reaction from fans and critics was very real for us with every new song we put out.”

The Mars Volta went on hiatus in September of 2012, and Bixler-Zavala announced via a tweet in January of 2013 that the band was over. This is the first rumblings of new music from former band members. Meanwhile, Flea already keeps busy with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thom Yorke’s musical project Atoms of Peace, so he’s adding to his already packed scheduled.
