Soundgarden to Perform Before Nine Inch Nails on Summer Tour, Says Guitarist Kim Thayil

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil says the band will perform before Nine Inch Nails on the duo’s upcoming summer trek

Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails are co-headlining a massive U.S. tour this summer, but even though the two are sharing the top spot on the ticket, Nine Inch Nails will close out each night of the run.

So, why does Nine Inch Nails get that coveted closing spot? According to Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, it simply makes since to have the Trent Reznor-fronted band closer out each night of the tour, because Nine Inch Nails have such a production-heavy set, with lots of lights and lasers. In comparison, Soundgarden has a more bread-and-butter live show approach.

“It makes sense that we perform before them,” Thayil told Mike Jones of radio station DC101. “Nine Inch Nails is a production-heavy band. I saw the show a few months ago. (They have) amazing lights, lasers… We’re more of a live rock act, and they use a lot of production, both in the audio performance and the visual performance.”

He added, “If we were to play after them, it would be a long wait while they struck all their equipment and gear and they cleared the stage for us. It’s a lot easier for us to play before them. It would be very difficult logistically (for us to close the show).”

Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails’ summer tour kicks off July 19 in Las Vegas.
