Former Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist John Frusciante Doesn’t Make Music for the Public
John Frusciante, formerly of the Peppers, makes music solely for himself
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has turned his interests to electronic music, and he’s making music for himself, literally. Speaking with Electronic Beats, Frusciante said he doesn’t think about the public at all when he’s writing new music, and even goes about assuming nobody will hear it.
“For the last year and a half I made the decision to stop making music for anybody and with no intention of releasing it, which is what I was doing between 2008 and 2012,” Frusciante said. “I felt that if I took the public into consideration at all, I wasn’t going to grow and I wasn’t going to learn.”
He added, “Being an electronic musician meant I had to woodshed for a while, so I have a good few years’ worth of material from that period that’s never been released.”
Frusciante did, however, recently release new music. His debut album arrived last month as “Trickfinger,” a new project that focuses on acid house electronic music.
“At this point, I have no audience,” he said. “I make tracks and I don’t finish them or send them to anybody, and consequently I get to live with the music. The music becomes the atmosphere that I’m living in. I either make really beautiful music that comes from classical, or I make music where the tempo is moving the whole time, and there’s no melodic or rhythmic center.”
Frusciante played with Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1988 to 1992, and returned to the fold from 1998 to 2009.
