Metallica Drummer Lars Ulrich Names His Heroes

Lars Ulrich discusses his heroes ahead of the band’s new album release

There are many budding metal drummers who look up to Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, but Ulrich isn’t above having a few of his own heroes. The longtime drummer says some of his heroes include his dad Torben, late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and – this one is extra cool – his band mate, frontman James Hetfield.

“He is just the coolest musician,” Ulrich told Rolling Stone of Hetfield. He added that “Sometimes I think he may be underappreciated in terms of just how vast his talent is.”

Those who have watched the 2004 documentary about Metallica remember seeing some scenes that showed tension between Ulrich and Hetfield. Ulrich admits that the film showed some conflicts and says watching that documentary back was “pretty hard.”

“Some of the other guys have been more transparent about how difficult it was for them,” Ulrich said. “We all dealt with it in different ways; I dealt with it by shoving it under a rug, which obviously is Psychiatry 101 that you shouldn’t do that. Some of it was just so difficult, I had to emotionally remove myself.”
