Sevendust had a productive year, between the Atlanta metal band releasing a new album, “Blood & Stone,” and band members Clint Lowery and Morgan Rose both releasing debut solo albums. Now, Sevendust frontman Lajon Witherspoon is stepping up and releasing his first bit of solo music to mark a new year.

For years now, Witherspoon has teased that he’s been working on a solo album, and as 2021 kicked in, he made good on that promise. Witherspoon has released a cover of the Jacob Banks track “Chainsmoking,” which can be streamed below. “Chainsmoking” is off Banks’ 2017 EP, “The Boy Who Cried Freedom.”

“Chainsmoking” shows off the soulful, bluesy side of Witherspoon’s range and style. In a post on social media, he revealed that along with his lead vocals on the track, Ra frontman and producer Sahaj Ticotin used “his mouth, feet and hands” to provide make the sounds that are heard in the background of the song.

Witherspoon added that the cover of “Chainsmoking” is “a teaser track for what I have coming with my solo project.” He added, “I’m very excited to finally get something out that shows a bit of the direction I’m heading in.”

Late last year, Witherspoon told Audio Ink Radio that his upcoming solo album is “more radio-friendly” than Sevendust. He added, “Even though Sevendust is on the radio, I just feel like the songs are even more radio-friendly than Sevendust. You might not hear any screaming and stuff in it, and it’s maybe not as metal, but there are some metal elements in it.

In Sevendust news, the band is gearing up to perform a livestream concert on Friday (Jan. 8), in which the band will perform their 2001 studio album “Animosity” from front to back. “Animosity” is the third studio album by Sevendust and peaked at No. 28 on the chart.
