Liz Phair Prepping New Album, ‘Soberish’; Listen to New Song, ‘Spanish Doors’
Liz Phair is back with her first studio album in 11 years, “Soberish”
Singer-songwriter Liz Phair has revealed the details of her first new studio album in 11 years. The record, called “Soberish,” will mark Phair’s seventh studio release and hit stores June 4.
“Soberish” will feature the previously released single “Good Side,” which came out back in 2019, plus a new, just-released single called “Spanish Doors,” which is available now via digital download and streaming services.
Phair says “Spanish Doors” is about “the fracturing of a beautiful life, when everything you counted on is suddenly thrown up for grabs.” She added that for the song, she “drew inspiration from a friend who was going through a divorce, but the actions in the lyrics are my own.”
“Soberish” marks the return of Phair working with longtime producer Brad Wood, who worked with Phair on her first three albums: 1993’s “Exile in Guyville,” 1994’s “Whip-Smart” and 1998’s “whitechocolatespaceegg.”
“I found my inspiration for Soberish by delving into an early era of my music development, my art school years spent listening to Art Rock and New Wave music non-stop on my Walkman,” Phair said in a statement. “The English Beat, The Specials, Madness, R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People, Yazoo, The Psychedelic Furs, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson and The Cars.”
In other news, Phair is currently set to tour this summer opening for Alanis Morrissette’s 25th anniversary Jagged Little Pill tour. The trek, which also features Garbage, was originally scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
