New System of a Down music is a real possibility, says frontman Serj Tankian

Last year was a big one of System of a Down, as the band released new music for the first time in a whopping 15 years. The new music came in the form of two tracks, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” which raised money and awareness for Armenia during its brutal war with Azerbaijan.

So, is more new music on the way? Frontman Serj Tankian says that while the band isn’t actively writing new music, he has “hope” that one day, the band will be able to write the follow-up to System of a Down’s 2005 studio album, “Hypnotize.”

“I’m really proud of the work that we’ve done with System of a Down, and it does give me hope that one day we might be able to get it together and do something again together,” Tankian said in an interview with Heavy Consequence.

“I think we were able to do it because we were able to put aside our philosophies and our creative differences even, and just go, ‘Who’s got a song that’ll work?'” he added. “Because at this point, it’s just a weapon for truth and not about us. And it worked.”

Regarding last year’s two new System of a Down tunes, Tankian said he’s “extremely proud” of the band working together “for our people and the cause, at a time where Azerbaijan and Turkey not only attacked Armenians in Artsakh with military equipment, but they also attacked the Armenian nation with disinformation around the world, using caviar diplomacy over the years.”

In other news, Tankian also recently released a new EP, “Elasticity,” featuring a bevy of new songs which were originally intended to be recorded by System of a Down. He also appears in a new film the “Truth to Power” documentary, that looks at his work over the years to support Armenia.
