Corey Taylor Says Not to Expect a Stone Sour Reunion Soon
Those hoping for a Stone Sour reunion won’t get it in the near future, Corey Taylor says
Corey Taylor was already huge with his metal band Slipknot when he launched the more melodic group Stone Sour in 1992. In fact, some would argue that certain rock fans liked his material in Stone Sour more than Slipknot. But, Taylor is saying that Stone Sour don’t have plans to get back together anytime soon. The band took an indefinite break in 2020, and now, Taylor is focusing on his solo work and Slipknot. Why does Taylor say not to expect a Stone Sour reunion soon?
Speaking in a recent interview, Taylor discussed Stone Sour and why he believes his music in the band will never hit the popularity that it did in Slipknot. Speaking with Metal Hammer, Taylor said it was a “very selfish thing” when he brought back Stone Sour during a break from Slipknot in 2002.
“I knew we would never have the same impact,” Taylor said regarding Stone Sour compared to Slipknot. “You have one chance at grabbing lightning, and Slipknot was that chance.”
He added, “When I was young, maybe I wanted to have more credit (for Slipknot) from an ego standpoint. It’s only in retrospect that you can look at it and go, ‘I was actually a very big part of it.'” He continued that, I knew that at the time I didn’t write music as good as the guys in Slipknot. I wasn’t confident in my abilities — I contributed that much [makes tiny space between his thumb and index finger. Reforming Stone Sour meant I got better as a songwriter and was able to contribute music to Slipknot. But it came from a purely selfish place of just wanting to feel like I could do it.”
Even though Taylor says not to expect a Stone Sour reunion soon, he does keep hope alive. When elaborating in the interview, he doesn’t shoot down the idea of ever regrouping with Stone Sour. He just saying it won’t happen in the near future. “I’m in no hurry to do it again, let’s put it that way,” Taylor said. Then, he kept things a bit mysterious, stating, “The reasons are nobody’s business.” That fair, but it’s also worth mentioning that Stone Sour’s success wasn’t so shabby. The band’s 2006 single “Through Glass” hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the U.S., and it stayed there for seven weeks. It also reached No. 2 on the Alternative Songs chart and crossed over to pop radio and the Billboard Hot 100.
Taylor released his sophomore solo album, “CMF2,” in September. The album marks his follow-up to his 2020 solo debut, “CMFT,” which garnered the rock radio hit “Black Eyes Blue.” As for “CMF2,” the record has already scored Taylor a No. 2 mainstream rock radio hit in “Beyond.” For the latest on Corey Taylor’s solo music, including his upcoming tour dates, visit his official website.
