Those who heavy metal together stay together, and in that spirit, it’s always sweet to see a couple get engaged at a metal show. It’s become a pretty common thing to see couples get engaged at major concerts and music festivals. Sometimes, the performers even get in on the fun, which makes for an extra special moment.
But, what happens when the person getting engaged actually is the performer? Over the weekend, the crowd at a major music festival got treated to a special proposal from the vocalist of a famed heavy metal band and the love of his life.
It came as a surprise, because nobody seemed to be expecting the big moment. His girlfriend also seemed very surprised.
Metal Singer Proposes Onstage
The United Kingdom’s Download Festival took place over the weekend, and it’s always a massive event. The show brings thousands of metalheads to the Donington Park motorsport circuit in Leicestershire, England.
“Download Festival is a mammoth rock event, based at the spiritual home of rock Donington Park,” the festival states on their website. What’s funny is that the site already has a countdown clock to next year’s event.
During the festival, which has been around for years, one of the big metal performers was Cradle of Filth, and during the band’s set, vocalist Dani Filth proposed to his longtime partner Sofiya onstage. She looked totally surprised, in a good way, by the proposal.
Filth, who has longtime said a collaboration with Ed Sheeran is in the works, stopped his set and said to the crowd, “I want to beg a few minutes of your time. This is really … important, at least for me. I’m gonna embarrass my partner now. Sofiya, come out here.”
So, his girlfriend, Sofiya Belousova, walked onto the stage. From there, someone dressed in a cloak entered from the opposite side of the stage as Filth said, “In your own time, ring bearer.” Then, he showed the crowd a ring and said it was “all the way from Mordor.” Finally, he dropped to his knees, as is traditional for an engagement, and said some very sweet things to his girl.
“Sofiya, love of my life, my queen. will you….” he said, as the crowd started to cheer. She leaned over to give him her response, which was “yes.” The couple hugged and kissed. Then, the vocalist thanked the crowd for their time before starting the song “Malignant Perfection.”
Note that Sofiya is not the lady pictured above, who is in the band. See Sofiya in the YouTube video below.
Cradle of Filth Vocalist Talks Legacy
Back in 2023, Filth spoke with Decibel magazine about his legacy with the band. When asked what’s the most challenging thing about doing what he does more than three decades in, he said, “I guess it is, and it’s not only just that. Other people emulate what you do as well, so if you have other vestiges of ideas simmering from stuff you’ve already done, sometimes you find it being taken over by other people.”
He added that he had “found that several times when I started to write a record, like somebody else has done this.”
He added, “It’s hard to be original, it gets harder and harder. Everything’s a challenge, everybody would be doing it if it was easy to do, but it’s in our blood, it’s our nature, it’s our job. It doesn’t come easy, but it’s not unnatural.”
