Foo Fighters are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album by releasing a new single, titled “Today’s Song.” It’s the first new music from the band since their 2023 album, But Here We Are. Listen to it below.

The track is classic Foo Fighters, opening with a quiet, plaintive intro before exploding into a massive mid-tempo wall of guitars surging under Grohl’s melodic and emotional vocals.

‘Today’s Song’ Review

Grohl has always had the ability to convey his emotions through music, and that’s apparent on “Today’s Song.” The track has his deep, personal lyrics entangled with raw, rock ‘n’ roll riffing to create something that’s a mix between a ballad and anthemic rock song.

“Today’s Song” is a mid-tempo rocker that starts very soft and unassuming and launches into a typical Foo Fighters track. It really sounds like it could be played along any of their previous hits from now or even back in the 1990s and early-2000s.

It’s a melodic song that brings out the emotive quality of Grohl’s thick vocals. One can’t help but wonder if it was inspired by Grohl’s recent issues with infidelity, which he has been very open and honest about.

Dave Grohl Describes New Foo Fighters Track

According to a press release from the Foo Fighters, the track’s lyrical themes are about “personal evolution and perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainty and the passage of time.”

Grohl even sent out a message with the new music, stating, “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”

He added, “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”

Grohl gets emotional in the message to his audience, too, saying, “your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”

That’s just part of the message Grohl shared. His full message is available to read on Foo Fighters’ website. Also, something that’s extra cool is that the new song’s cover art was created by Grohl’s daughter, Harper Grohl.

The original song follows a cover that the Foo Fighters just released of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It.” Grohl recorded the instrumentals for the track back in 1995, and he finished the song this year.
