Pearl Jam Shooting to Release New Album This Year, Says Mike McCready
Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready says the band hopes to release their new album ‘this year, for sure’
After months and months of fielding different messages from Pearl Jam’s camp regarding the band’s upcoming album, it appears guitarist Mike McCready is finally ready to dish a bit about follow-up to 2009’s “Backspacer.” In fact, McCready has told Rolling Stone that he hopes Pearl Jam fans will get their ears on the new release sometime “this year, for sure.”
“[The band’s] working on demos right now and we’re going to be recording soon,” he told Rolling Stone. “We have seven songs that are relatively completed. But then we have an additional 15 ready to go aside from any that [frontman] Eddie [Vedder] brings in, so we’ll weed through those.”
As for the sound of the new album, McCready says it’s a slightly different path for the guys of Pearl Jam, but still stays true to the band’s aura. “It’s kind of a logical extension of what Backspacer was,” he said. “But I think there’s a little bit more experimental stuff going on. There’s a Pink Floyd vibe to some of it, there’s a punk rock edge to other stuff.”
Pearl Jam are working with longtime producer Brendan O’Brien on the upcoming album, and McCready says they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’re excited to get it done, because we’ve kind of been waiting for about two years to do it,” he said.
