Elton John appears on the Red Hot Chili Peppers track ‘Sick Love’

Red Hot Chili Peppers just released a new album, “The Getaway,” and the set features a collaboration with pop star Elton John on the tune “Sick Love.” Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kiedis described how the collaboration came to fruition.

“(Bass player) Flea came in one day with this bass line that melted my heart,” Kiedis said. “He was inspired by the chords of Elton John’s ‘Bennie and the Jets.’”

“We finished writing this song and it was really nothing like Elton’s — different tones, different textures, different lyrics, different melodies,” Kiedis added. “But we felt like Elton had an ownership of those chords.”

The band then went to John to ask to give him a songwriting credit on “Sick Love,” since he inspired the tune, and they wanted him to perform on the song, too.

“We said, ‘Elton, we’d like to give you credit for this, but we’d also like you to play on it,” Kiedis said. “With his blessing, it seemed to make more sense.”

“The Getaway” is currently available. The album’s debut single is “Dark Necessities.”
