U2’s Bono is a Lot Richer Thanks to Facebook
Bono has surpassed Paul McCartney as the richest music artist, according to a new report
Paul McCartney has continually been called the world’s richest music artist, but U2 frontman Bono has now reportedly taken that title, and it’s not thanks to music. According to a new report in the U.K.’s Mirror, U2’s bank account has risen sharply over the past few years because of his 2.3 percent ownership of Facebook. His Facebook wealth, according to the article, is worth roughly $1.4 billion.
According to that number, Bono is now the richest musician in the world, far ahead of McCartney, whose wealth came in at around $1.1 billion, as reported by the most recent Sunday Times of London’s Rich List. About $225 million of McCartney’s wealth comes from his wife, trucking heiress Nancy Shevell.
It’s worth noting that the riches Bono has made from his ownership in Facebook outweighs all of the money he’s made in U2. He purchased shares in Facebook when the social media website went public in 2009.
