Metallica Release Cover of Thin Lizzy Classic, ‘Borderline’
Watch Metallica debut a new cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Borderline”
Metallica recently performed a riveting show at their 2022 All Within My Hands foundation’s “Helping Hands” benefit concert. If you weren’t able to attend the show or stream it live, the band is releasing a special piece of the show for your viewing pleasure.
One of the highlights of the night came when Metallica performed a cover of the Thin Lizzy track “Borderline.” It was the first time the band had ever taken on then song. Now, they’ve released that cover, and you can watch and listen view the YouTube video below.
This isn’t Metallica’s first time showing their affection for Thin Lizzy. The band is known for their popular cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Whiskey in the Jar,” which has become one of the guys’ most popular cover songs. This new Thin Lizzy cover is different, though, in that it brings out the blues-rock base of Thin Lizzy’s sound with blues-based chords and James Hetfield’s raw vocals. This is also an acoustic cover, allowing Hetfield’s emotional vocals to really show through.
Joining Metallica onstage for the performance was Avi Vincour of the band Goodnight, Texas, who played acoustic guitar and also sang background vocals. The rendition of “Borderline” happened during the acoustic portion of the performance, which also featured unplugged versions of “The Unforgiven,” “Blackened,” the UFO cover “It’s Killing Me” and, as already discussed, “Whiskey in the Jar.” The evening also brought the live debut of Metallica’s newest single, “Lux Æterna,” from their upcoming “72 Seasons” album. That record will drop on April 14.
Metallica have a slew of 2023 tour dates lined up in support of “72 Seasons.” They’re performing two nights in various cities around the world, offering two completely different sets and opening acts. Find their roster of upcoming shows here.
