How’s this for a tease? Metalcore band Bad Omens deleted everything on their Instagram profile earlier this week. Everything. Fans were shocked. What was going on? Well, the guys were gearing up to dramatically release a new song. And they did. Bad Omens and Poppy have collaborated on a new track, “V.A.N.” The new song begins with Poppy’s pop-style vocals before heavy guitars and synths crash in. Then, Poppy continues with a catchy verse, singing very fast, before it crescendos into a hard-hitting metal anthem. Bad Omens vocalist Noah Sebastian doesn’t sing on there, but he did write and produce the track. That really shows off his talent.

The new song comes right after the band teased the music video and revealed the song’s meaning. “V.A.N.” stands for “Violence Against Nature.”

“‘V.A.N’ is an industrial metal masterpiece about an artificial intelligence entity set out on a course to destroy humanity,” a press release explains. “The track immediately captivates the listener with Bad Omens’ hypnotic production and Poppy’s angelic, whispering vocals as she takes on the role of the Concrete Jungle Universe AI character ‘V.A.N.’ It then shock-transitions into a powerful onslaught of frantic drums, heavy guitars, and Poppy’s vocals evolving from otherworldly tones to aggro screams.”

Of the song and songwriting process, Sebastian said in a statement, “That’s a song that started just with the hook ‘Violence against nature,’ and then after saving the project with the acronym and seeing it we realized it could be fun to think of ‘VAN’ as a name. Thus the rabbit hole of ideas began that led us to decide to write lyrics from the perspective of an artificial intelligence gone rogue.”

“V.A.N.” is the first bit of new music that Bad Omens has released since their popular 2022 album, “The Death of Peace of Mind.” Bad Omens are also working on an new album, the Concrete Forever project, that will serve as the Concrete Jungle soundtrack.
