Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell Announces 2012 Tour Dates
Soundgarden main man plans return of solo shows in 2012
Soundgarden crooner Chris Cornell hit the road heavily last fall to promote his solo “Songbook” album, which dropped last November, and although 2012 is supposed to be the year of Soundgarden’s return, Cornell isn’t letting it go by without playing a few more solo shows. The grunge crooner has announced five new solo U.S. dates for May. Check out the itinerary at the bottom of the page.
Cornell’s “Songbook” album includes 16 tracks, most of which are already familiar to fans of his work with Soundgarden and Audioslave. The track list includes a mix from Cornell’s popular grunge-rock nuggets with Soundgarden (“Black Hole Sun”), Audioslave (“I Am the Highway,” “Doesn’t Remind Me”) and Temple of the Dog (“Call Me a Dog”). The set also packs several of Cornell’s solo tunes, plus covers of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You.”
While Cornell has die-hard fans that will trek anywhere to see him play, he didn’t realize it until now. He’s both surprised and touched by the warm response he’s getting at these small, intimate solo shows. “It blows me away that there’s this willingness by an audience — continually, night after night, just all over the country and even in different parts of the world — to sit and listen to a guy singing a song and playing acoustic guitar quietly, and not making a sound,” Cornell told Billboard. “And then between songs they’re shouting out (requests) and actually having a conversation with the guy that’s on stage. It’s really something I didn’t expect, and it’s something that I really like. I didn’t realize it was going to be as special to me as it is.”
