‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack Featuring Arcade Fire, the Decemberists is No. 1

Soundtrack featuring Maroon 5, Arcade Fire, the Decemberists and more hits No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart

Movie buffs aren’t just flocking to theaters to check out “The Hunger Games”; they’re also rushing to music outlets to get their ears on the film’s soundtrack. The 16-track soundtrack for “The Hunger Games” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, counting sales of 175,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

The album features songs from the Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Taylor Swift, Neko Case, Punch Brothers, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Maroon 5, Miranda Lambert, Jayme Dee, the Secret Sisters and more, highlighting both up-and-coming artists and already famous names. Last weekend, it was already projected that the soundtrack would hit the top of the charts.

The No. 1 showing makes “The Hunger Games” the first soundtrack from a theatrical film to enjoy that status since Michael Jackson’s “This Is It,” which dropped in 2009. It’s also the first soundtrack offering tracks from multiple artists to hit No. 1 since the 2009 soundtrack for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” So, yes, it’s safe to say this is a big success for “The Games.”

Other Billboard winners this week include alternative rock act the Shins with their new album, “Port of Morrow,” which hit the No. 3 spot on the chart with 75,000 copies sold and Adele’s “21,” which made it to No. 2 with 130,000 units out. Last week’s No. 1 album, “One Direction’s Up All Night,” came in at No. 4 with 55,000 sold and Odd Future’s debut studio release, “The OF Tape Vol. 2,” is at No. 5 with 40,000.
