A Perfect Circle Guitarist Has Plans to Rekindle Ashes Divide
The past few years, A Perfect Circle guitarist Billy Howerdel has been writing and performing with his ethereal, rock-pop solo project, ASHES dIVIDE. But this year, he finally got back together with Maynard James Keenan and A Perfect Circle to play a full-scale, arena tour and headline music fests Rock on the Range (Columbus, Ohio) and Toronto’s Edgefest ‘11 (Toronto, ON).
Big thanks to A Perfect Circle guitarist Howerdel for stopping by to talk about the hard rock band’s gig at Rock on the Range in May and what to expect from A Perfect Circle in the coming months. Blabbermouth.net, the CNN of heavy metal and hard rock, picked up the podcast from the interview. Check out Blabbermouth’s news story via their website. It rocks.
Here’s the podcast with Howerdel: [audio:https://audioinkradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Billy-Howerdel-Interview-Anne-Erickson.mp3|titles=Billy Howerdel Talks With Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio]
Before A Perfect Circle, you were the guitar tech for Tool, Nine Inch Nails and other outfits. How did that time influence your playing?
In a lot of ways. I was definitely the geeky guy that got fully immersed in things, with guitars or whatever rig I was working on. It was all about learning everything I could, which was both a blessing and a curse. It’s nice to get into things, but you kind of socially retract for a bit and get fully involved with what you’re working on. But, as far as guitars, I worked with a lot of different guitars for a lot of different guitar players, and the guitars I liked the most… I really prefer Les Pauls. It’s the guitar I always thought sounded the best and felt comfortable to play, on top of it being a classy, timeless work of art.
Any plans to rekindle ASHES dIVIDE?
Yes! I’m writing songs for A Perfect Circle and ASHES right now, and I’m trying to figure out the best time and way to do it. I might do some scattered shows throughout the summer, but with this A Perfect Circle tour, it will probably be best to get out this fall with ASHES for a lengthy run across the country.
