Dave Grohl Announces ‘Sound City’ Movie Theater Screenings

Dave Grohl’s ‘Sound City’ documentary is set for a one-night screening in 44 North American movie theaters

In a move that isn’t entirely surprising, Dave Grohl has announced that his upcoming documentary, “Sound City,” will see a special, one-night screening in movie theaters across North America before the film is released in stores on Feb. 1. “Sound City” will be screened in 44 movie theaters on Jan. 31.

“Sound City” chronicles the famed Sound City Studios, where Grohl and Nirvana laid down tape for the group’s legendary 1991 sophomore album, “Nevermind.” The documentary features interviews and performances from many of the musicians who have recorded at the studio over the years. In other news, Grohl’s Sound City Players, a band made up of some of the musicians who appear in his Sound City documentary, has booked a second gig. The band will play Jan. 31 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, Calif., the same day “Sound City” premieres in theaters.

The Sound City Players consist of Grohl, all the members of the Foo Fighters, former Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic, Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen, Queens of the Stone Age’s Alain Johannes, Fear frontman Lee Ving, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, producer Chris Goss, John Fogerty and Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. More dates for Grohl’s Sound City Players are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
